Research Associate/ Manager, The Quantitative Bioelemental Imaging Center (QBIC, qbic.northwestern.edu) at Northwestern University is seeking a candidate to serve as a manager in the QBIC shared instrument facility. QBIC focuses on quantitative elemental mapping of a wide variety of sample types ranging from single cells to complex materials. The center is a part of a new transdisciplinary institute at Northwestern called the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute (CLP, clp.northwestern.edu). CLP proceeds from the premise that interdisciplinary approaches can generate transformative scientific advances in ways that traditional, single-discipline methodology cannot. In this regard QBIC, a CLP shared instrument facility, fosters collaborative research at the interface of the chemical, physical, engineering, and life sciences. The facility’s mission is to provide top notch instrumentation and expertise to aid researchers in cutting edge research on a variety of trace elemental analysis and quantitative mapping platforms. Ongoing projects involve research teams in the Feinberg School of Medicine, McCormick School of Engineering, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and the International Institute for Nanotechnology.

Responsibilities:

Improve and develop analytical techniques to meet the expanding needs of university researchers.

Provide instrument training and support for customer-run applications in inductively coupled plasma- mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), HPLC speciation and laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS, microwave digestion, atomic absorption spectroscopy (AA), multi-photon confocal microscopy, and EM associated EDS and EELS methodologies.

Perform sample processing for customers using various analytical techniques

Perform independent research in bio-inorganic chemistry focusing mainly on the role of metals in biological applications.

Support development of technical papers, posters and other internal/external documents and communication, as needed.

Maintain records and laboratory environment to comply with regulatory requirements and standard operating procedures.

Minimum requirements:

PhD degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Materials Science or similar degree, plus teaching experience

Experience in instrumental and analytical methods, experimental design, running related instruments, and computer analysis

Proficient in sample preparation for trace metal analysis, spectroscopic techniques, mass spectrometry and chromatography

Mechanically inclined in troubleshooting and maintaining analytical instruments
